Unified Messaging Solutions (UMS) filed 33 separate suits against Ameriprise, BB&T, BBVA, BMO Harris, BOK, Cablevision, Capital One, Charles Schwab, Cox, EarthLink, Fidelity, Fifth Third, Fiserv, FriendFinder, GE Capital, GEICO, Humana, Huntington, Juno, Memory Lane, NetZero, Northwestern Mutual Life, Pandora, People’s United, PNC, Popular, Santander Holdings, State Street, SunTrust, TD Ameritrade, US Bancorp, United Online, USAA and Wells Fargo alleging that the defendants’ webmail services infringe five patents related to web-based messaging systems. UMS has filed over 20 prior suits since March 2011 against over 40 defendants including American Express, AT&T, Bank of New York Mellon, eBay, Facebook, Google, Morgan Stanley, RIM, Sprint Nextel,T-Mobile, Time Warner, Travelocity, Twitter, Vanguard, Verizon, Walgreen, and Yahoo. UMS, a subsidiary of Acacia Research, is the exclusive licensee of the patents-in-suit, which originated with J2 Global Communications/NetOffice Solutions and were assigned to Advanced Messaging Technologies in May 2010.
