TeleCommunication Systems and Acacia Sub Enter Patent Licensing Alliance
- February 21, 2013
TeleCommunication Systems (TCS), a provider of secure mobile communication technology, announced this week that it has entered into a patent licensing alliance with a subsidiary of Acacia Research. Under the alliance, the Acacia subsidiary has acquired rights to a portion of TCS’ location-based services patent portfolio. TCS reportedly holds 263 US and international patents and has more than 350 patent applications pending. Acacia subsidiaries reportedly control over 250 patents. Last year, TCS and Acacia entered into two patent licensing alliances, whereby Acacia acquired the rights to the inter-carrier messaging (ICM) patent portfolio and the wireless data synchronization and data transfer patent portfolio. Paul Ryan, CEO of Acacia Research stated, “We are pleased to once again be selected to help TCS realize fair market value from their research and development investment.” Acacia subsidiaries, EMSAT Advanced Geo-Location Technology and Location Based Services, have previously asserted several patents related to location-based services against a variety of mobile communication and device companies, including AT&T Mobility, Cellco Partnership, Metro PCS, T-Mobile, and Virgin Mobile.
