Acacia Sub Enters Into License and Settlement Agreement with Morgan Stanley

February 13, 2013

Acacia Research announced today that its subsidiary, Unified Messaging Solutions, has entered into a licensing and settlement agreement with Morgan Stanley.  In May 2012, UMS filed suit against Morgan Stanley and several others alleging that the defendants’ webmail services infringe five patents related to web-based messaging systems. According to the press release, the agreement resolves the patent litigation that was pending between the parties at Illinois Northern District Court. Since 2011, UMS has filed over 100 prior suits against a multitude of companies spanning the financial services, media publishing, networking, and E-commerce industries. UMS is the exclusive licensee of the patents-in-suit, which were assigned to Advanced Messaging Technologies by J2Global Communications/NetOffice Solutions in May 2010. RPX acquired the rights to the UMS portfolio as part of the Acacia Bundle deal completed in Sept. 2012.
