Express Card Systems, a subsidiary of Acacia Research, filed five separates suits against Apple, Cafe Press, Office Depot, Sam’s West, and Staples alleging that the defendants’ printing technologies infringe two patents related to a card printing system (5,552,994 and 5,748,484). Last month, Express Card Systems asserted the ’994 and ’484 patents against 12 online photo services providers, including Costco, CVS, Rite Aid, Shutterfly, Wal-Mart, and Vistaprint. Since October 2010, Express Card Systems has filed a total of 17 suits, including the current string of suits.
