HTC and LG Latest Target in Digitech Campaign

January 30, 2013

Digitech Image Technologies, a subsidiary of Acacia Research, filed two separate suits against HTC and LG alleging that the defendants’ smartphones and tablets infringe a patent related to digital image capture and rendering on a device (6,128,415). The Digitech campaign, launched in July 2012, previously targeted camera makers and retailers, but was expanded in December that same year to include makers of mobile phones and personal computers. The patent-in-suit was originally issued to Polaroid in October 2000 and was assigned to Mitcham Global Investments (along with other patents from bankrupt Polaroid) in January 2010.  According to the USPTO assignment database, Mitcham assigned five Polaroid patents, including the patent-in-suit, to Digitech in May 2012. Digitech currently has over 30 active cases in the Central District of California against multiple defendants. 1/28, Central District of California, assigned to Judge Josephine Staton Tucker and referred to Magistrate Judge Jean P. Rosenbluth, 8:13cv00134; assigned to Judge David O. Carter and referred to Magistrate Judge Marc L. Goldman, 8:13cv00135.
