Optical Devices, a subsidiary of OD Management Systems, filed suit against Sharp alleging that the defendant’s Blu-ray players infringed six patents related to optical detection systems — such as those used to enhance an image for viewing, or analyze light waves to determine one of a number of characteristic properties. The patents-in-suit include U.S. Patent Nos. 6,847,597, 6,809,995, and 7,839,729, and three reissued patents which originated from U.S. Patent No. 6,603,134 (RE40,927, RE42,913, and RE43,681). This is the first patent infringement suit initiated by Optical Devices. The complaint asserts that Optical Devices is the exclusive licensee of the patents-in-suit, although the assignments are not reflected in the USPTO assignment database as of today. RPX reviewed the ’134 patent as part of an open market opportunity (Acorn Technologies) in April 2009. In December of the following year, RPX reviewed the ’597, ’995, and ’729 patents as part of the IP Holdings open market opportunity. 1/25, District of Delaware, 1:13cv00139.
