Jury Finds Apple’s iPhone Products Infringe Three MobileMedia Ideas Patents
More than two years after the filing of the initial complaint brought by NPE, MobileMedia Ideas, a jury returned a verdict on December 13, 2012 finding that Apple infringed three patents related to call management and camera units (6,070,068, 6,253,075 and 6,427,078). In March 2010, MobileMedia filed suit against Apple alleging that several of Apple’s products infringed 16 patents related to a variety of technologies in information processing, mobile phones, and media player devices. MobileMedia obtained rights in the patents (as well as dozens of other patents and patent applications) through assignments from Sony and Nokia in January 2010. During the course of litigation, all but three patents were removed from the suit by joint stipulation and through a motion for summary judgment of non-infringement filed by Apple. After extensive discovery and pretrial procedures, the case went to trail and the jury returned a verdict for MobileMedia, finding that certain versions of Apple’s iPhone products directly infringed the patents. MobileMedia currently has two pending suits in the Eastern District of Texas against Research in Motion and HTC Corporation. 1:10-cv-00258
