Google’s Street View Found to Not Infringe Four Patents

October 11, 2012

October 8, 2012- After two years of litigation brought by non-practicing entity, Vederi, Google was found not to infringe four patents related to visual navigation of a geographic area. In its order on summary judgment, the court ruled that Google Street View does not satisfy the “substantially elevations” claim limitation, construed to mean vertical flat views, literally or under the doctrine of equivalents.  Street View, the court found, displays curved or spherical images. The judge noted,  “Vederi has fought well and hard to make a genuine issue of the views that Street View captures, processes and displays. But the court is persuaded that Street View presents only curved/spherical views, not vertical flat ones: Street View ‘allows a user to look around inside a spherical virtual environment, providing the effect of actually being at the location where the images used to create the spherical image were captured.’” The suit against Google is the only litigation filed by Vederi to date. 2:2010cv07747
