j2 Sues Internet Fax Providers with Patent from Verizon

October 1, 2012

j2 Global filed suit against Open Text and EasyLink Services, alleging that defendants’ Internet fax services infringe a patent related to fax-to-email message delivery.  j2 Global has filed over 20 prior suits since February 2004, six of which included Advanced Messaging Technologies, a subsidiary of j2 Global Communications.  j2 has previously filed suit against EasyLink, and still has two active cases in the Western Division of California’s Central District Court in Los Angeles that include four patents, all of which have received reexamination certificates.  The patent-in-suit included in this new complaint has not been litigated before.  The patent-in-suit was assigned to j2 Global by Verizon Patent and Licensing in July 2012.  9/14, Central District of California, assigned to Judge Audrey B. Collins and referred to Magistrate Judge John E. McDermott, 2:2012cv07968.
