Acacia Sues Altera and PMC-Sierra with Patents Originating from Hitachi

September 19, 2012

Advanced Processor Technologies (APT) [NPE], a subsidiary of Acacia Research, filed two separate suits against Altera and PMC-Sierra, alleging that the defendants’ products that include ARM9 and ARM11 processors infringe three or four patents (depending on the defendant) related to data processors with changing clock frequency, operating voltage, virtual memory, and lookaside buffers.  APT has filed nine prior suits since January 2011 against over a dozen defendants including AMD, Analog Devices, Marvell, Nvidia, Xilinx, and Zoran.  The patents-in-suit originated with Hitachi and were assigned to Renesas, a joint venture between Hitachi, Mitsubishi Electric and NEC, before being assigned to APT.  APT is one of several subsidiaries established in connection with the Renesas-Acacia strategic patent alliance formed in August 2010.  Two of the patents-in-suit were assigned to APT by Vachellia, another Acacia subsidiary, in August 2010 while the other two patents were assigned to APT directly by Renesas in May 2011. 9/18, Eastern District of Texas, assigned to Judge Rodney Gilstrap, 2:2012cv00602; 2:2012cv00603.
