More Patents from Symantec in NPE Hands

August 17, 2012

ReefEdge Networks [NPE] filed four separate suits against Aruba, CDW, Cisco, Dell, Meru, and Ruckus Wireless, alleging that the defendants’ controllers, access points, and related software infringe three wireless computing patents.  These are the first patent infringement suits initiated by ReefEdge Networks.  The patents-in-suit originated with a former operating company called ReefEdge and were subsequently assigned to Symantec in 2005.  This is the third new NPE litigation campaign involving patents from Symantec.  The other two, Data Carriers and Clouding IP/STEC IP, are campaigns that have been linked to IP Navigation (IPNav).  IP Nav sued Symantec twice in 2011 (in the Gemini IP and SFA Systems campaigns).  According to the complaint, the ReefEdge Networks portfolio includes nine issued US patents and 16 foreign patents and applications.  8/15, District of Delaware, no judge yet assigned, 1:2012cv01042; 1:2012cv01043; 1:2012cv01044; 1:2012cv01045.
