New NPE Sues Amazon, A9, and Quidisi

June 21, 2012

Hand Held Products [NPE] filed suit against A9 Innovations, Amazon, and Quidisi, alleging that the defendants’ mobile applications infringe a patent related to decoding barcode  information in a captured image.  This is the first patent infringement suit initiated by Hand Held Products, a company that manufactured linear and 2D handheld barcode scanners based on imaging technology and was acquired by Honeywell in October 2007.  According to the complaint, the patent-in-suit was developed by researchers at Welch Allyn and was assigned to Welch Allyn Data Collection (WADC), a division of Welch Allyn that was spun off as a separate company.  In 1999, WADC purchased Hand Held and began selling products under the Hand Held brand.  6/18, District of Delaware, no judge yet assigned, 1:2012cv00768.
