Uniloc Sues Rackspace with New Patent Acquired on Open Market

June 13, 2012

Uniloc [NPE] filed suit against Rackspace, alleging that Rackspace’s servers running Linux Kernel (version 2.6 or higher)  infringe a patent related to handling overflow and underflow in processing floating-point numbers. This is the first suit in which the patent (5,892,697) has been asserted. RPX reviewed the patent in March 2011 as an open market opportunity (Brakefield). Uniloc has filed over 15 prior suits since September 2003 against over 80 defendants, including Activision Blizzard, Adobe, Electronic Arts, Microsoft, Sony, and Texas Instruments.  James Brakefield is the named inventor on the patent, which was assigned to Uniloc Luxembourg in January 2012.  6/12, Eastern District of Texas, Judge Leonard Davis, 6:2012cv00375.
