Worldwide Mobile Payment Transactions to Surpass $171.5 Billion in 2012

May 29, 2012 – Market research firm, Gartner reports that worldwide mobile payment transactions will reach more than $171.5 billion in 2012, a 62% increase from 2011, and the number of mobile payment users will reach 212.2 million, a 32% increase.  According to the report, Web/WAP is the preferred access technology in North America and Western Europe and will account for 88% of total transactions in North America and 80% in Western Europe by 2016.  NFC transactions will reportedly remain relatively low through 2015, and merchandise purchases including e-commerce and in-store purchases will drive transactions in North America and Western Europe.
