Acacia’s Adaptix Files Suit against Nokia Siemens and T-Mobile

May 14, 2012

Adaptix [NPE], a subsidiary of Acacia Research, filed suit against Nokia Siemens Networks and T-Mobile, alleging that Nokia Siemens base stations supplied by T-Mobile infringe five patents related to cellular technology. Adaptix was acquired by Acacia in January 2012.  The patents-in-suit originated with Broadstorm Telecommunications, Adaptix’s predecessor.  Adaptix operated as a 4G equipment manufacturer until 2008, and then divested its equipment business to focus on developing its patent portfolio.  The Adaptix portfolio was unsuccessfully offered for sale on the open market several times over the past five years, and RPX reviewed the portfolio in May 2011.  On January 13, 2012, Acacia Research announced its acquisition of the Adaptix patent portfolio for $160 million.  On January 17 and 18, 2012, Adaptix indicated in two 8-K filings that it had entered into licensing agreements with Microsoft and Samsung.  5/11, Eastern District of Texas, no judge yet assigned, 6:2012cv00318.
