Round Rock Sues SanDisk
Round Rock Research [NPE] filed suit against SanDisk, alleging that SanDisk’s embedded flash drives, microSD flash memory cards and solid state drives infringe 11 patents related to integrated memory circuits, wire bonds, synchronous flash memory, non-volatile memory devices, and hybrid memory management. Round Rock acquired the patents-in-suit from Micron Technology in December 2009 and March 2012. Round Rock has filed over 15 suits since October 2010 against defendants including Acer, Amazon, ASUSTek, Dell, Gateway, HTC, and Oracle. Round Rock has also been subject to four actions for declaratory judgment brought by ASUS Computer International, ASUSTek, Motorola, and SanDisk. Round Rock has reportedly licensed its portfolio to Apple, Nokia, Samsung and Sony, and an unknown buyer purchased a Round Rock covenant not to sue for over $35M at the ICAP Ocean Tomo Spring 2011 auction. Round Rock was formed by John Desmarais, the former head of patent litigation at Kirkland & Ellis. 5/3, District of Delaware, no judge yet assigned, 1:2012cv00569.
