NPE Sues RIM over Emoticons

March 19, 2012

Varia Holdings [NCE] filed suit against RIM, alleging that RIM’s Blackberry mobile phones infringe a patent related to mobile phone keyboards that allow the user to display a list of emoticons for selection.  Varia filed one prior suit in March 2012 against Samsung.  The patent-in-suit originated with Wildseed before being assigned to Varia Mobile in August 2007. Varia Mobile was divested from Tegic Communications (an AOL property) in September 2007 and acquired by RealNetworks in January 2010.  3/15, District of Delaware, 1:12-cv-00320.
