New NPE Sues Samsung over Emoticons

Varia Holdings [NCE] filed suit against Samsung, alleging that Samsung’s mobile phones infringe a patent related to mobile phone keyboards that allow the user to display a list of emoticons for selection.  This is the first patent infringement suit initiated by Varia.  The patent-in-suit originated with Wildseed before being assigned to Varia Mobile in August 2007.  Varia Mobile, which was divested from Tegic Communications (an AOL property) in September 2007 and acquired by RealNetworks in January 2010.  3/15, Southern District of New York, 1:2012cv01899.
