ContentGuard Holdings Sues ZTE

February 29, 2012

ContentGuard Holdings [NPE] filed suit against ZTE, alleging that ZTE’s mobile communications and computing devices infringe six patents related to digital rights management.  This is the first patent infringement suit initiated by ContentGuard.  According to the complaint, ContentGuard made several attempts to discuss a licensing agreement with ZTE, but they were ignored.  ContentGuard was spun out of Xerox PARC in 2000 and acquired by Pendrell Technologies, an IP investment and advisory firm, in September 2011.  According to Pendrell’s press release regarding the acquisition, companies including LG Electronics, Nokia, Sharp, Sony Ericsson, and Toshiba have entered into licensing agreements with ContentGuard and “approximately fifty percent of handsets worldwide are licensed.”  2/27, Eastern District of Virginia, 1:2012cv00206.
