Renesas Files for DJ against Alliacense, HSM, and TPL

December 30, 2011

Renesas Electronics filed an action for declaratory judgment against Alliacense [NPE], HSM Portfolio [NPE], and Technology Properties Limited (TPL) [NPE], seeking declaration that Renesas’ semiconductor products do not infringe two patents related to inverter circuits and memory devices.  According to the complaint, Renesas was contacted in August 2011 by Alliacense, “a TPL Group Enterprise,” and encouraged to take a license.  The patents identified in the complaint originated with Thunderbird Technologies (founded by solo inventor), before being assigned to HSM and subsequently licensed to TPL.  TPL is a licensing and enforcement entity that has filed more than a dozen patent suits since 2008.  HSM and TPL have filed one prior suit together in September 2011 against Advanced Micro Devices, Cirrus Logic, Elpida Memory, Freescale, Fujitsu, Hynix, Marvell, Micron, Nvidia, ON Semiconductor, ProMOS, Qualcomm, STMicroelectronics, Sandisk, Sony, Toshiba, Xilinx, and Zoran. 12/28, Northern District of California, 3:2011cv06662.
