On September 25, 2013 STAR Co. subsidiary Lake Cherokee Hard Drive Technologies expanded its enforcement campaign, suing Dell, Marvell, and Western Digital Technologies. Lake Cherokee is introducing a new patent (5,583,706) in addition to the others asserted in previous suits against Marvell, MediaTek, Samsung, Seagate, Toshiba and Western Digital in July. In those suits, Lake Cherokee asserted two patents (5,844,738; 5,978,162) that relate to a synchronous read channel to read a magnetic disk storage device. The patents-in-suit (originally owned by Cirrus Logic) were assigned to Lake Cherokee by Broadcom in 2010. The ‘738 and ‘162 patents were previously asserted in litigation against Marvell and Samsung, as well as a number of Marvell clients not named in the current suits: Bass Computers, Hitachi, LSI, STMicroelectronics, and Tech Data. That case ended in August 2013 with a finding that Marvell did not infringe the asserted claims of either patent. 9/25, Eastern District of Texas, 2:13cv00762, 2:13cv00695
