IPLearn Starts New Campaign

January 16, 2014

IPLearn-Focus filed its first suit this week against Microsoft although related entity, IPLearn, has been active since 2004. The new suit asserts three patents related to using an imaging sensor connected to a computer to facilitate learning (8475174; 8538320; 8538321). All three patents were issued in 2013 and assigned directly to IPLearn-Focus. Microsoft’s Kinect product and services, which use an image sensor to monitor users, are accused of infringing the patents-in-suit. According to the complaint, IPLearn-Focus also has an ongoing letter campaign; it sent an assertion letter to Microsoft in November 2013. IPLearn-Focus is a subsidiary of IPLearn, an NPE that filed its most recent patent infringement suits in 2011. Those three cases also relate to computer-facilitated learning and are still active. 1/10, Northern District of California, 3:14cv00151
