WiLAN Sub Sues Netflix over Data Protection Patent

March 27, 2014

WiLAN subsidiary Copy Protection has sued Netflix for alleged patent infringement. The patent-in-suit relates to a method of downloading and cryptographically protecting data to prevent unauthorized copying (7,079,649). Copy Prevention’s complaint accuses Netflix’s Watch Instantly service, specifically its means of preventing streaming content from being stolen, copied, or saved, of infringing ‘649. The asserted patent originated with British Telecommunications and Copy Prevention acquired it in January 2013 shortly after the entity was incorporated in Florida. This appears to be the first time ‘649 has been litigated. 3/20, Delaware District Court, 1:14cv00365
