Cloud Services, Tablets, and Encrypted Hard Drives Targeted in New Wave of PanTaurus Filings

In September 2013, NPE PanTaurus LLC, filed its first 15 lawsuits against makers of hard drives and computing devices. Those cases named ASUS, Acer, Apple, Apricorn, BlackBerry, Data Locker, Fujitsu, Global Silicon, HP, Imation, Lenovo, Micron, SanDisk, Sony, and Verbatim  as defendants and asserted a single patent (6,272,533) generally related to computing system storage that includes a “manually operative switch”.  Accused products were described as “FIPS 140-2 compliant”.  (FIPs 140-2 is a government standard for security in a cryptographic module published in 2001.) Seven months later, all fifteen cases have been closed or are in the process of being closed according to recent docket entries.
