WiLAN’s Q1 Financial Report Highlights Licenses with Toshiba and Wireless Carrier

May 8, 2014

WiLAN released its Q1 financial results last week. Revenue in the first quarter of 2014 totaled $26.0 million, up from the $18.4 million reported for Q1 2013. The increased revenue was primarily attributed to the timing of fixed payments of license agreements signed in 2013—WiLAN reportedly signed license agreements with 17 companies last year. Three undisclosed licensees individually accounted for 25%, 12%, and 10% of revenue in the first quarter, and the top ten licensees accounted for 81% of revenue. In late March 2014 WiLAN announced a license agreement with Toshiba resolving its lawsuit over patents related to signal processing and interlaced video display. Litigation initiated by Hon Hai Precision was also resolved during the first quarter; payment and other terms of the Toshiba and Hon Hai agreements were not disclosed. No other new licenses were announced during Q1, though several were revealed by press releases issued in April. According to an April 2nd press release, a WiLAN subsidiary signed a license with an undisclosed US wireless carrier for technology related to network management; the patents are said to be a subset of a portfolio of patents related to telecommunication network management and mobile multimedia that WiLAN acquired from Siemens in July 2012. WiLAN reports using $5.7 million in the first quarter to pay for patents it previously acquired, amounts it says were in accounts payable at year end or were included in patent finance obligations. The entity expects to continue to pay $4.0 million per quarter for the rest of 2014 to retire its current patent finance obligations.
