Uniloc’s Software Campaign Hits Brocade and Six Others

June 26, 2014

Uniloc’s decade-long campaign continues with seven new suits against Avanquest, Brocade, Corel, DRS, Rapid7, SDL International, and Zebra Technologies. The patent-in-suit (5,490,216) relates to software registration and has been asserted by Uniloc and its subsidiaries in more than 70 litigations since 2003, mostly against software companies. As in previous suits, Uniloc USAs most recent complaints accuse defendants’ activation and authentication systems that permit customers to activate and/or register software. The ‘216 patent, which originated with Uniloc, was reexamined in 2011 and 2013; the patentability of all claims was confirmed without amendments. 6/25, Texas Eastern District Court, 6:14cv00570, 6:14cv00571, 6:14cv00572, 6:14cv00573,
