New NPE Orlando Communications Sues 17 Electronics Manufacturers and Wireless Carriers
Acacia subsidiary Orlando Communications filed 17 patent infringement suits in two days against a group of electronics manufacturers and wireless carriers. Each litigation pairs a manufacturer with a carrier: HTC, Huawei, Kyocera, LG, Motorola, or Pantech with AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, or Verizon. Orlando Communications alleges defendants are infringing two patents related to determining the range of radiofrequency signals and encoding and transmitting data over a communications link (5,687,196, 6,009,553). Tablets, smartphones, and “other 3G and 4G voice/data mobile units” manufactured and sold by defendants are the accused products. It does not appear that the ‘196 and ‘553 patents were involved in any litigation before they were assigned to Orlando.
