Acacia Signs 15 License Agreements and Acquires Single New Patent Portfolio in Q2

July 29, 2014

Following four consecutive quarters of declining revenue, last week Acacia Research reported second-quarter revenue of $50.1M, up from $23.1M in Q2 2013. Trailing twelve-month revenue totals $93.2M, a 41% increase from $66.3M reported in March 2014. Acacia primarily attributes this boost in revenue to the increased number of trial dates set for 2014. The NPE associates revenue with trial dates—a metric it says explains the revenue trough of 2013, a year in which only three trials were on calendar. Ten of Acacia’s cases were set to go to trial this year, and most of those cases have already terminated. Its subsidiary SmartPhone Technologies had two trials on calendar last month, against Huawei and ZTE, but both cases settled according to court documents. Acacia says it expects more than 20 trial dates to be set for 2015.
