Google Spreadsheets Accused of Infringing Acacia Subsidiary’s Patents
A group of six patents is asserted against Google in a suit filed by Acacia Research subsidiary Data Engine Technologies (5,303,146, 5,416,895, 5,590,259, 5,623,591, 5,784,545, 6,282,551). Google’s spreadsheet document applications are accused of infringing the asserted patents. Three of the asserted patents have been used in Data Engine’s previous litigation while the ‘146, ‘591, and ‘545 patents have not been previously asserted. All six patents relate to electronic spreadsheets, particularly their interface and management, as well as the creation of spreadsheet applications. The patents-in-suit all originated with Borland Software. Data Engine is the current owner of the patents although no assignment has been recorded.
