UnoWeb Virtual Adds Facebook to Online Advertising Campaign

March 22, 2016

Inventor-controlled Texas entity UnoWeb Virtual, LLC has added Facebook to its online advertising campaign in the second suit the NPE has filed since February (2:16-cv-00234). In its newest complaint, UnoWeb Virtual accuses Facebook of infringing ten patents from multiple families. Three of the asserted patents generally relate to advertising revenue sharing (7,580,858; 7,987,139; 8,140,384), while five generally relate to selecting additional content for a page based on keywords (7,730,083; 7,941,345; 8,037,091; 8,065,386; 8,307,047). The remaining two generally relate to sharing executable code and page resources associated with a user and an application in order to render web pages (7,971,198) and replacing web content with related content linked to its source, based on user interaction (8,402,163). UnoWeb Virtual’s first lawsuit, filed on February 23, targeted Alliance Data Systems (2:16-cv-00162) and asserted a subset of the patents levied against Facebook (the ‘139, ‘384, ‘345, and ‘386 patents). Both companies are accused of infringement by offering products and services related to web content management. The complaints attempt to proactively defend each patent against an Alice challenge by citing to DDR Holdings, arguing against preemption, and referencing specific implementation details.
