Microsoft Sixth Place Mobile OS Vendor with 1.6% Worldwide Market Share
August 12, 2011- Gartner announced worldwide market share for handset vendors. As of the end of Q2 2011, Nokia was the market leader with 22.8% share of the market by unit sales of mobile handsets. Samsung was second with 16.3%, LG third with 5.7%, Apple fourth with 4.7% and ZTE fifth with 3.0% (tied with RIM). HTC was seventh, followed by Motorola, Huawei and Sony Ericsson. Sales of smartphones increased 74% year-over-year and now account for 17% of all handsets sold. Worldwide smartphone OS market share by unit sales placed Android in the lead with 43.4% of the market, Symbian second with 22.1%, iOS third with 18.2%, RIM fourth with 11.7%, Bada fifth with 1.9% and Microsoft Windows Phone sixth with 1.6%.
