Dolby Files First Patent Suit since 2003 against RIM

June 16, 2011

June 16, 2011- Dolby Laboratories announced yesterday that the company filed suit against RIM in the US and Germany for alleged infringement of Dolby-owned patents related to audio compression.  The five patents-in-suit in the US matter were developed at a Swedish company, Coding Technologies, that was acquired by Dolby for $250 million in 2007.  This is the first patent suit initiated by Dolby since 2oo3.  Dolby’s press release states, “Litigation was regrettably our last resort after RIM declined to pay for the use of Dolby’s technology.”  Accused products identified in the complaint include RIM smartphones and tablets.
