Empire IP Launches Fifth New NPE Litigation Campaign

June 21, 2012

Cuozzo Speed Technologies [NPE] filed four separate suits against Chrysler, Garmin, General Motors, JVC Americas, and TomTom, alleging that the defendants’ GPS-based navigation systems that provide speed limit warnings to alert drivers that they are exceeding the speed limit infringe a patent related to a speed limit indicator and method for displaying speed and the relevant speed limit.  These are the first four patent infringement suits filed by Cuozzo.  The patent-in-suit was assigned by the inventor to Empire IP in February 2012 before being assigned to Cuozzo Speed Technologies in May 2012.  Empire IP’s website states that it was founded by “patent attorneys who formerly worked in prestigious New York City law firms representing some of the world’s largest corporations.”  Empire IP is behind four other NPE campaigns in 2012: PanoMap, PotterVoice, Rotatable Technologies, and Secor View Technologies.  6/15, District of New Jersey, assigned to Judge Claire C. Cecchi and referred to Magistrate Judge Joseph A. Dickson, 2:2012cv03623, 2:2012cv03624, 2:2012cv03625, 2:2012cv03626.
