New NPE Sues Apple

February 9, 2012

SmartData [NPE] filed suit against Apple, alleging that Apple’s iPhone, AppleTV, and Remote infringe a patent related to wireless computing technology.  This is the first patent infringement suit initiated by SmartData.  According to the complaint, Apple sent a letter to SmartData in June 2006 inviting “constructive dialog” regarding potential licensing of SmartData’s patents, but then ceased communication with the plaintiff.  Jean-Pierre Buttet is the named inventor on the patent-in-suit, which was assigned directly to SmartData in November 2003.  2/6, Northern District of California, 3:2012cv00583.
