Wi-LAN Sues RIM

January 24, 2012

Wi-LAN [NPE] filed suit against RIM, alleging that RIM’s tablets and mobile phones infringe two patents related to adaptive frequency hopping for Bluetooth-enabled devices.  Wi-LAN has filed 10 prior suits against Acer, Alcatel-Lucent, Apple, Calix, Conexant, and HTC.  One of the patents-in-suit originated with Metricom before being assigned to Wi-LAN by Proxim Wireless in March 2010.  The other patent-in-suit is part of the Glenayre Electronics portfolio that Wi-LAN acquired in June 2011 for $8 million cash.  The Glenayre portfolio consists of 60 issued US patents related to mobile communications.  1/20, Southern District of Florida, 1:2012cv20232.
