Round Rock Sues Amazon over RFID Products

December 28, 2011

Round Rock Research [NPE] filed suit against Amazon, alleging that Amazon’s RFID products infringe nine patents related to RFID identification readers and tags.  Round Rock acquired the patents-in-suit from Micron Technology in 2009, and has filed 15 prior suits since October 2010 against defendants including Acer, ASUSTek, Dell, Gateway, HTC, and Oracle.  The complaint in the current suit says Round Rock sent a notice letter to Amazon in November. Round Rock has reportedly licensed its portfolio to Apple, Nokia, Samsung and Sony, and an unknown buyer purchased a Round Rock covenant not to sue for over $35M at the ICAP Ocean Tomo Spring 2011 auction.  Round Rock was formed by John Desmarais, the former head of patent litigation at Kirkland & Ellis.  12/22, District of Delaware, 1:2011cv01279.
