Apple Responds to Lodsys Assertion Letters

May 23, 2011

May 23, 2011-  A Macworld article is said to contain the text of a letter from Apple’s General Counsel to Lodsys,  the NPE that  reportedly initated a recent assertion campaign against iOS application developers for a patent purportedly related to in-app updates.  According to the letter published by Macworld,  Apple asserts that, “Apple is undisputedly licensed to these patents and the Apple App Makers are protected by that license. There is no basis for Lodsys’ infringement allegations against Apple’s App Makers.”  The Lodsys patents were originally assigned to individual inventor Daniel Abelow and subsequently to Ferrara Ethereal.  Webvention acquired the patents in an assignment recorded in 2009.  Webvention has been linked to Intellectual Ventures by the press.  Webvention assigned the patents to Lodsys in August 2010.  Correspondent information for Webvention and Lodsys is identical.
