September 30, 2011 – Pendrell Technologies announced the acquisition of ContentGuard for $90 million. ContentGuard, which was acquired by Microsoft, Thomson and Time Warner in 2005, holds a portfolio of digital rights management patents. According to Pendrell’s press release, companies including LG Electronics, Nokia, Sharp, Sony Ericsson, and Toshiba have entered into licensing agreements with ContentGuard and “approximately fifty percent of handsets worldwide are licensed.” According to Pendrell’s web site: “Pendrell Corporation, through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Pendrell Technologies, Inc., provides innovative intellectual property solutions for leading companies worldwide. In June, 2011, Pendrell Technologies acquired Ovidian Group, a leading intellectual property services firm. In July, 2011, the Company changed its name from ICO Global Communications (Holdings) Ltd. to Pendrell Corporation. Pendrell is headquartered in Kirkland, Washington, and trades on the NASDAQ exchange under the ticker symbol PCO.” Several members of the management team have worked for Clearwire.
