Pro Se Named Inventor Sues Apple over Apple Pay

May 10, 2023

Proceeding pro se, individual inventor Paul Poniatowski has filed his first litigation, suing Apple (6:23-cv-00316) in the Western District of Texas over a single patent generally related to a mobile phone with a dedicated touchscreen button used to initiate a “commercial transaction”, an “optical input for receiving information concerning prices of goods”, a “network hub for wireless exchange of information”, and the authorization of transactions using a PIN associated with the mobile phone. Apple is accused of infringement through the provision of the Apple Pay service, Poniatowski targeting multiple features, including the button used to add cards to Apple Pay, functionality for using an iPhone’s camera to capture card details, the use of an Apple account for authentication purposes with “financial institutions”, and notifications to signify the completion of a transaction.
