IV Suit Against Symantec and Veritas Dismissed Following Alice Invalidation

A Delaware judge has dismissed an Intellectual Ventures LLC (IV) suit against Symantec and its former subsidiary Veritas Technologies (1:13-cv-00440) after invalidating the last remaining patent-in-suit under Alice. On February 16, District Judge Leonard Stark entered final judgment for Symantec and Veritas three days after granting a motion for summary judgment filed by the two defendants, ruling that an IV data mirroring patent (5,537,533) asserted against the two companies was invalid as directed to the abstract idea of “backing up data” without the addition of a sufficient inventive concept.
