From Mobile Devices and QR Codes to Websites Using HTTPS

January 8, 2025

A few days into 2025, Secure Matrix LLC has already sued JCPenney (Penney Opco) (2:25-cv-00004), Mattress Firm (2:25-cv-00003), Posados Café (2:25-cv-00008), Rent-A-Center (2:25-cv-00009), Sally Beauty Holdings (2:25-cv-00010), Taco Bueno Restaurants (2:25-cv-00011), Tailored Brands (The Men’s Wearhouse) (2:25-cv-00013), TGI Fridays Franchisor (2:25-cv-00012), and Twin Peaks Restaurants (2:25-cv-00014), each in the Eastern District of Texas and each over the provision of websites that allow secure connections and authentication using HTTPS. This appears to be the second half of a wave of suits, the first half filed on the last day of 2024, at the other end of the alphabet: American Airlines (2:24-cv-01079), Brookshire Grocery (2:24-cv-01080), Cavender’s Out of State Stores (2:24-cv-01081), Celebrating Home Direct (2:24-cv-01082), Coburn Supply Company (2:24-cv-01083), Dal-Tile Corporation (2:24-cv-01084), and Dickey’s Barbecue Restaurants (2:24-cv-01085).
