West Texas Jury Awards Longhorn IP’s Katana Silicon Technologies $9.2M

July 22, 2025

A Western District of Texas jury has returned a verdict finding infringement of one of three claims from a single patent held by Katana Silicon Technologies LLC. It awarded the Longhorn IP LLC plaintiff $9.2M from defendant Globalfoundries as the amount that would “fairly and reasonably compensate” for the infringement found. The jury ruled against the defendant on its anticipation defense for the infringed claim (as well as on obviousness as to the two claims not found infringed). The verdict drops in a campaign under the shadow of a Federal Circuit appeal to determine whether Idaho’s bad-faith patent assertion statute is preempted by federal patent law.
