Washington Research Foundation (licensing arm of the University of Washington) has launched a new suit against mobile device companies for use of chip-level technology including LG, Nokia, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson. The current suit involves six patents related to low RF communications (Bluetooth technology). In a previous suit against Matsushita, Nokia, and Samsung, chip supplier CSR stepped in and settled the case for $15M. Apple, Dell, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and Toshiba were also later named as defendants in the prior suit. Broadcom and Marvell are reportedly licensed to WRF patents.
