Staples Added to Advanced Transactions E-Commerce Campaign

Advanced Transactions, LLC, an entity associated with Georgia monetization firm IPInvestments Group LLC (d/b/a IPinvestments Group), has revived its first litigation campaign with a suit against Staples (6:23-cv-00718) in the Western District of Texas. The plaintiff asserts eight patents broadly directed to various aspects of e-commerce technologies, with Staples accused of infringement through the provision of a wide array of products and services, including marketing email systems, mobile apps, gift and reward cards programs, e-commerce websites, and in-store/online ordering services. Its last active suit, a declaratory judgment action filed by American Airlines, was dismissed early last month.

In early February, RPX covered the recordation of the assignment of multiple patent portfolios from Intellectual Ventures LLC (IV) to a set of recently formed NPEs with apparent ties to Atlanta-based patent monetization firm IPInvestments Group LLC (d/b/a IPinvestments Group). Two of those recipient Georgia LLCs have now filed suit: Advanced Transactions, LLC hitting Belk (6:22-cv-00176) over the provision of a wide variety of products and services, including its marketing email system, online banking system, mobile apps, gift and reward cards, e-commerce website, in-store and online shopping services, and payment processing services, as well as related hardware and software products; and Alto Dynamics, LLC hitting Redfin (2:22-cv-00064) over the provision of its website, targeting features related to data collection, user login, and search functionalities.

IV Divests Hundreds of Patents to Another Group of Georgia NPEs

Public records suggest that a batch of newly formed NPEs, with apparent ties to Atlanta-based patent monetization firm IPInvestments Group LLC (d/b/a IPinvestments Group), may be gearing up to assert multiple patent portfolios received late last year from Intellectual Ventures LLC (IV). The transacted portfolios—which were divested by IV in late-August 2021—comprise hundreds of US assets and include patents originating with operating companies spanning multiple industries.
