NovaCloud Licensing Files Its First Suit, Hitting Meta in Delaware

NovaCloud Licensing LLC has filed a District of Delaware complaint against Meta Platforms (1:25-cv-00674), asserting five of the more than 50 patents that the now-plaintiff received from Ericsson in April 2024. Per NovaCloud, “Generally, the Accused Infrastructure and Services for the Asserted Patents include Meta’s datacenter and network infrastructure and video streaming services”. Last month, RPX noted that the plaintiff had recorded security interests in its received assets, one back to Ericsson itself, dated on April 8, 2025, and an April 18 one to an entity that appears to be tied to a prominent IP monetization backer.

Security Interests in the NovaCloud Licensing Portfolio Recently Recorded

In April 2024, Ericsson assigned 54 US patents to NovaCloud Licensing LLC. Now, just over a year later, the recipient has recorded security interests in the former Ericsson patents, one back to Ericsson itself, dated on April 8, 2025, and an April 18 one to NCLD1 LLC, an entity created in Delaware on March 26, 2025. While NCLD1 is of uncertain management and personnel, the correspondent for the interest transfer to NCLD1 is the cofounder of a prominent IP monetization backer.

One Recently Transacted Portfolio Takes Shape While Another Raises Eyebrows

In addition to the suggestive transfer of a portfolio of chip packing patents, reported here last week, publicly available USPTO assignment records reveal a transacted portfolio of “cloud computing and datacenter” patents taking shape in new hands, as well as 30 issued US patents generally related to biometric fingerprint sensors moving to a vehicle formed last year under the management of an individual with a patent monetization past.

Newly Recorded Assignments Track Recent Campaigns, Foreshadow Others

Last month’s review of notable patent assignments considered the movement of assets from Avaya to Dominion Harbor Enterprises, LLC; from Level 3 Communications to Sandpiper CDN, LLC; from Seiko Epson to IPValue’s 138 East LCD Advancements Ltd. and Lumitek Display Technology Ltd.; from Transaction Security to a “BioCrypt Access”; from Fortress Investment Group LLC’s KIP Prod P1 LP to Prodea Automation LLC; from EMM Patents Ltd. to Empire IP LLC; from Siemens and Abdelsalam Helal to Rokiot USA LLC; and from Proxicom Wireless, LLC to Secure Communication Technologies, LLC. While a couple of these entities again feature prominently, this month’s review extends well beyond them to cover the movement of patents away from other operating companies, as well as within several repeat monetization players.

Monetization Veterans Announce Acquisition of “Foundational Patent Portfolio of Cloud-Based Technologies”

Earlier this month, NovaCloud Licensing LLC announced the launch of “a new licensing effort to provide more accessibility to patented technologies that are fundamental to driving innovations across the cloud computing and datacenter sectors”. The firm indicated in its press release that it has acquired “a foundational patent portfolio of cloud-based technologies” from Ericsson, which NovaCloud’s public website suggests has global reach, including 40 patent families and more than 40 US patents. Joe Chernesky and Bill Goldman, both behind VideoLabs, Inc., lead the NovaCloud team.
