Inventor Files First Infringement Suit over Augmented Reality Patents, Years After Facing Alleged VC Sexism
Inventor-controlled Barbaro Technologies, LLC has filed suit against Niantic (2:18-cv-00773), alleging infringement of two patents generally related to the real-time integration of real-world data into a “virtual thematic environment”. The complaint recounts an alleged history of Google’s acquisition of John Hanke’s Keyhole, which first produced Google Maps and Google Earth before an internal turn to the development of location-based games ultimately led to the spinoff of Niantic. Barbaro Technologies accuses the defendant of infringement through its Ingress and Pokemon Go augmented reality (AR) applications.
