NPEs Have Launched over 80 Campaigns Since 2016 Asserting Patents Received from IV

RPX data indicate that since 2016, NPEs have collectively launched over 80 separate litigation campaigns asserting patents received from Intellectual Ventures LLC (IV). Meanwhile, the outflow of patents from IV persists, and divestments executed last year (primarily during the fourth quarter of 2019) continue to be recorded with the USPTO—many preceding the start of new NPE campaigns.

Q1 Sees a Shift Among Top NPE Assignees of IV Divestitures—and More NPE Suits Asserting Former IV Patents

The late 2019 peel off by Intellectual Ventures, LLC (IV) of more than 3,500 US assets to a batch of Georgia NPEs has ousted Dominion Harbor Enterprises, LLC from its long-held position as the top NPE assignee of IV divestitures. Meanwhile, as discussed in RPX’s Q1 in Review blog post, throughout the first quarter, NPEs continued filing new litigation asserting patents received from IV, hitting a broad range of targets, including over patents developed by major operating companies.

Campaign Targeting Mobile Device Display Backlights Expands in West Texas

Kamino LLC, an NPE associated with monetization firm IPValuation Partners, LLC (d/b/a IPVal), has added Amazon (6:20-cv-00052), AOC (6:20-cv-00053), Best Buy (6:20-cv-00054), and HP (6:20-cv-00055) as defendants in its sole litigation campaign, over a single patent generally related to a light-conducting plate for an LCD backlight. The new suits join active cases against Anker and Honeywell, sued in December 2019, and Fujifilm, sued earlier this month, in the Western District of Texas. Accused throughout the campaign have been mobile devices with certain backlight features, with Kamino calling out Amazon’s Echo Show and Kindle Fire, AOC’s 22” monitors, Best Buy’s Insignia Dual Camera Dash Cam, and HP’s 22er monitors.

Mobile Device Display Backlights Targeted in New IPVal Campaign

Kamino LLC, a recently formed affiliate of IPValuation Partners, LLC (d/b/a IPVal), has kicked off a litigation campaign over a single patent generally related to a light-conducting plate for an LCD backlight. The new complaints accuse F5cs (5:19-cv-00057), Panasonic (5:19-cv-00058), and Yulong Computer Communications (Coolpad Technologies) (5:19-cv-00056) of infringement through the provision of mobile devices, calling out certain features of the display backlights for the Panasonic Toughpad, the Fusion5 10.1 Inch Tablet PC, and Coolpad’s Defiant smartphone and Rogue tablet.
