As the last of the cases that Valyrian IP LLC filed before 2022 approaches its end following a notice of settlement, the apparent IP Edge LLC plaintiff has added a May round of suits—one against each of BT Group (1:22-cv-00698), Comcast (2:22-cv-02088), Consolidated Communications (1:22-cv-00699), and Cox Communications (1:22-cv-00700)—to the round filed at the end of April. Valyrian IP has identified Mark Hall as its only member. While the plaintiff keeps rolling through unified communications platforms with its single patent received from Siemens, in various district courts, another IP Edge plaintiff identifying Hall as its “sole owner and member” to the District of Delaware is now among the first plaintiffs to file a funding disclosure with Chief Judge Colm F. Connolly.

Late last month, Valyrian IP LLC added another round of complaints to its calling features campaign, suing 8x8 (1:22-cv-00562) and Charter Communications (1:22-cv-00563) in the District of Delaware and TPx Communications (6:22-cv-00431) in the Western District of Texas. The IP Edge LLC plaintiff has been litigating a single former Siemens patent since July 2019, again targeting call forwarding and/or call acceptance and rejection features within defendant systems, here, the 8x8 Business Phone, Spectrum Enterprise Unified Communications, and TPx Cloud Communication platforms, respectively.

As part of its late August filing burst, patent monetization firm IP Edge LLC, through plaintiff Valyrian IP LLC, added cases against first Dialpad (1:21-cv-01221) and then Infratel (2:21-cv-01172) to a litigation campaign begun in July 2019. A single former Siemens patent, generally related to a cordless phone system where calls are forwarded from a base station to handsets based on priority, has been at issue throughout. Valyrian IP targets call forwarding and/or call acceptance and rejection features, in these latest complaints, within the Dialpad and MightyCall communications platforms, respectively.

Valyrian IP LLC has filed a second round of suits in its campaign over a former Siemens patent generally related to a cordless phone system where calls are forwarded from a base station to handsets based on priority. The new defendants are Sangoma (1:20-cv-00447), sued in the District of Delaware; RingCentral (1:20-cv-00868), in the District of Colorado; and AT&T (4:20-cv-00263), SpectrumVoIP (4:20-cv-00264), and Verizon (4:20-cv-00266), all sued in the Eastern District of Texas. The prior cases in the campaign—filed in July 2019 against Avaya, Grandstream Networks, ICON Voice Networks, and Plantronics (Polycom)—each ended after at most six months of uneventful litigation.

The portfolio of patents received by monetization firm IP Edge LLC from Siemens in October 2018 has now given rise to eight campaigns, with the most recent waged by plaintiff Sonohm Licensing LLC. The NPE has accused Best Buy (Great Call) (1:19-cv-01619, 1:19-cv-01620), Fry’s Electronics (2:19-cv-00297), Juniper Systems (1:19-cv-00101), and ROKit (2:19-cv-07569) of infringing up to three wireless communications patents through the provision and/or sale of various devices that use Bluetooth 4.0 technology, including various smartphones, speakers, tablets, and wireless earphones. The retailers, Best Buy and Fry’s, are accused of infringement through the sale of such products made by Amazon, ASUSTek, BLU Products, Caterpillar, CellAllure, DigiLand, Ematic, Lenovo, RugGear, and Visual Land, among others, with Best Buy’s GreatCall tagged over the provision of the Jitterbug Smart2 and Jitterbug Flip “senior cell phones”; Juniper Systems, over its “rugged” mobile devices (i.e., the CT7G, Allegro 3, and Archer 3); and ROKit, over its iO Pro 3D, 3D, Light, and One smartphones.

In late August 2019, while IP Edge LLC dropped four brand new litigation campaigns through litigating entities Aristors Licensing LLC (over a patent received from an inventor-controlled entity), Enchanted IP LLC (over a patent received from Huawei), Sonohm Licensing LLC  (over patents received from Siemens), and Zyrcuits IP LLC (over a patent received from Linex Technologies, Inc.), the Texas monetization firm also added cases across an even broader set of its many campaigns. Altair Logix LLC, Digi Portal LLC, EncodiTech LLC, Saros Licensing LLC, and Wave Linx LLC—each a Texas plaintiff associated with IP Edge—have all filed cases over the past week.

Valyrian IP LLC has become the seventh plaintiff in apparent association with IP Edge LLC to file suit over patents that the monetization firm received from Siemens in October 2018. The patent that Valyrian has now asserted against Avaya (1:19-cv-01436), Grandstream Networks (1:19-cv-01437), ICON Voice Networks (3:19-cv-01829), and Plantronics (Polycom) (1:19-cv-01438) generally relates to a cordless phone system where calls are forwarded from a base station to handsets based on one of three priority levels assigned to a phone number as stored with caller ID info in a directory: “lowest priority” (or “DO NOT DISTURB”), “intermediate priority”, and “highest priority”. The NPE targets the defendants over the provision of cordless phone systems with “Do Not Disturb” features that allow the user to pick certain phone numbers from a directory as “priority” numbers, where calls still go through when Do Not Disturb is enabled.
