Texas Jury Issues $20M Verdict Against Google in Suit Brought by Inventor
On February 10, a Texas jury found that Google (2:13-cv-00103) infringed three anti-malware patents (RE43,500; RE43,528; RE43,529) through various Chrome products. The lawsuit was brought in 2013 by co-inventor Alfonso Cioffi and the family of his late partner and co-inventor, Allen Rozman, and the trial followed a 2015 Federal Circuit ruling overturning the district court’s earlier claim construction of the term “web browser process” (2015-1194). The jury’s verdict also included a $20M damages award, which the jury characterized as a running royalty.
