Four LCD Television Makers Hit by New NPE Campaign
New NPE, Surpass Tech Innovations, launched a campaign asserting patents related to liquid crystal display (LCD) modules. Surpass filed three lawsuits against defendants LG, Samsung, Sharp, and Sony. LG is named separately in one of the cases while the other two suits accuse both Samsung and Sony and in one of those two cases, Sharp. The suit against LG alleges infringement of a patent for an LCD driving circuit (7,202,843). The complaint accuses one of LG’s LCD modules and televisions of infringing the ‘843 patent. The suit against Samsung and Sony accuses Samsung’s LCD modules (and televisions manufactured by both defendants) of infringing the ‘843 patent. A third suit, filed against Samsung, Sony, and also Sharp includes a second patent (7,420,550) and accuses Sharp’s LCD modules and televisions manufactured by all three defendants of infringement. The patents-in-suit originated with VastView Technology. VastView appears to be a Taiwanese maker of integrated circuits for display products. In December 2013, VastView assigned the patents to Advanced IP Innovations, which shares correspondent information with plaintiff entity, Surpass. 3/14, Delaware District Court, 1:14cv00336 1:14cv00337 1:14cv00338
